Subsidy & Specs Guide
Farm Pond Subsidy & Technical Specifications Guide
A practical guide for farmers constructing water harvesting ponds (krishi kulam / shet tale). Understand official subsidy schemes, required site specifications, and plastic lining requirements.
1. Government Farm Pond Subsidies in Kerala & India
Multiple central and state schemes assist farmers with rainwater harvesting, farm pond excavation, and lining. Subsidy amounts and criteria vary by district and land holding size.
Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, GoI
PMKSY (Har Khet Ko Pani & Watershed Development)
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana provides financial assistance for water harvesting structures, community ponds, and on-farm moisture conservation. Applications are managed through district watershed teams and state agriculture departments.
Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers' Welfare
State Horticulture Mission (SHM) – Kerala
Offers assistance for creating farm ponds and community water harvesting structures, particularly in hilly and plantation tracts like Idukki and Wayanad for spices (cardamom, pepper) and horticultural crops. Subsidies typically cover up to 50% of the project cost within prescribed departmental ceilings.
Government of Kerala AIMS Portal
Krishi Bhavan / Subhiksha Keralam / Local Panchayats
Local Krishi Bhavans and Grama Panchayats regularly provide decentralized agricultural plans and funds for digging and relining farm ponds. Farmers can register and apply directly online through the AIMS portal or visit their local agricultural office.
Department of Fisheries
PMMSY & State Fisheries Department
For aquaculture, fish farming, and biofloc tanks, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and Kerala State Fisheries offer dedicated capital subsidies for pond excavation and waterproof sheet lining.
2. Technical Construction Specifications
To ensure your pond qualifies for departmental inspections and holds water reliably without wall failure, adhere to standard agricultural engineering practices:
Bank Slopes (Side Batter)
Never dig vertical earth walls. In laterite or stable soils, maintain at least a 1:1 slope (1 foot horizontal for every 1 foot vertical). In loose, sandy, or alluvial soil, a 1.5:1 slope is required to prevent banks from caving in under hydrostatic pressure.
Bed Preparation & Cushioning
Remove all roots, rocks, and sharp debris from slopes and the pond bed. Compact the surface thoroughly. Before laying the waterproof sheet, spread 5 to 7 cm (2–3 inches) of fine sieved soil or quarry sand as a soft bed to protect against puncture.
Continuous Anchor Trench
Excavate a continuous trench around the perimeter at least 1.5 ft wide and 1.5 ft deep, set back at least 1 to 1.5 ft from the pond brim. The liner must lay into the trench and be backfilled and tamped with soil to resist wind lift and sliding.
Overflow Spillway & Freeboard
Always provide a minimum of 1.5 to 2 feet of freeboard (gap between high water level and the pond rim). Install a dedicated overflow pipe or protected spillway channel to direct excess monsoon water away without washing out pond embankments.
3. Lining Material: What Carlo TarpX Supplies
Transparency about materials is critical before applying for or utilizing departmental grants:
What we supply: Multi-layer Waterproof Plastic Tarpaulin (150–250 GSM)
Our sheets are manufactured from heavy-duty UV-stabilized plastic tarpaulin, precision factory heat-welded in one complete seamless piece to your exact required size. They are lightweight, tear-resistant, easy to handle without heavy machinery, and very economical for farm water harvesting, fish farming, biofloc, and cardamom plantation storage.
What we do NOT supply: HDPE Geomembrane
Carlo TarpX does not supply rigid HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) geomembranes (300 to 500 micron/IS 15351). While multi-layer plastic tarpaulin is widely accepted by local Krishi Bhavans and smallholder farmers, some specific large central civil tenders strictly specify HDPE geomembrane. Check with your agricultural officer or certifying engineer beforehand.
Plan Your Dimensions & Get an Exact Sheet Quote
Use our interactive calculator to find your exact required sheet dimensions (accounting for depth and anchor trenches) and estimate water capacity in litres.
